Cutting-edge thermal solutions for motorsport
The motorsport industry depends on advanced heat exchanger technology to achieve optimal performance, efficiency, and a competitive edge. Key examples include water charge air coolers and transmission hydraulic oil coolers. These heat exchangers must feature lightweight construction, a compact design, high reliability, and exceptional pressure and thermal performance. These attributes are essential for boosting vehicle efficiency, minimising emissions, and enhancing overall performance.
Our team has extensive experience closely working with Formula 1 teams, developing and delivering innovative additive manufacturing (AM) heat exchangers over the years.
Here are some thermal solutions that we offer to the motorsport industry.
WCAC (Water Charged Air Cooler)
In motorsport, the Water Charge Air Cooler (WCAC) is a crucial component of the cooling system designed to optimise the performance of turbocharged engines. It functions by circulating water through a heat exchanger that cools the compressed air before it enters the engine's combustion chamber. This process enhances combustion efficiency, prevents heat-related issues, and contributes to consistent and high-performance engine output.
The WCAC is integrated into the overall cooling system of the car, working in conjunction with radiators and other components. Continuous development efforts in Formula 1 focus on improving the efficiency of these cooling systems to maximise engine reliability and power delivery.
Morpheus Designs is dedicated to innovating and customising WCAC systems by utilising advanced materials and cutting-edge design techniques. Our focus is on enhancing cooling efficiency, reducing weight, and ensuring optimal performance under the extreme conditions of competitive racing.
Functions:
Cools the intake air from the turbocharger or supercharger using water-glycol as the cooling medium.
Hydraulic oil cooler
In the realm of motorsport, hydraulic oil coolers stand as critical components, playing a pivotal role in optimising the performance and reliability of hydraulic systems within high-performance cars. These coolers are designed to dissipate heat generated during the operation of hydraulic components, such as braking and clutch systems, as well as hydraulic suspensions. By regulating the temperature of the hydraulic fluid, oil coolers contribute to consistent system operation, preventing overheating and ensuring reliable functionality during the rigorous demands of racing.
Hydraulic and transmission oils are more viscous with higher Prandtl number. We conduct specific CFD analysis on high Prandtl number and low Reynolds flow to optimise the heat transfer for these applications. Morpheus leads the way in customising these coolers by integrating lightweight yet durable structures to boost cooling efficiency while minimising weight and aerodynamic drag.
Functions:
Cools the car's hydraulic oil with a water-glycol coolant.
